I detest all hyper-controlling religious orders.
I'm so confused about who I am! Apparently, writing dispassionate information regarding Islam makes me a Muslim apologist. Yet, in various threads I also took issue with those who claimed that ALL religions are completely bad and laid out a logical reason for my argument...so that must make me a Catholic/Protestant/insert-any-religion-here apologist.
Can one person be a Catholic/Muslim apologist?! :) I love this place. :)
I agree with PSacramento. ALL religions should just get real, adopt a zero-tolerance policy, immediately turn over to the police all information regarding the creeps, and quit placing children as risk.
This isn't brain surgery.

Women make excellent priests.
They always have!
I am reading a book that compares Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. In one section the editors document how women played significant parts in each religion BEFORE the religions became "organized." ...Jehovah used women as prophets and judges, early Christianity had women prophesying IN THE CONGREGATION (i.e., Jehovah was speaking directly through them and to the congregation), and Mohammed designated a woman to lead the weekly prayers...something that they are not now "allowed" to do.
It seems that once a group moves from small, outlier status to something that has some numbers and a level of legitimacy, it starts attracking men...who see an opportunity to gain power by pushing women off the stage.

There are two problems here leading to confusion
I don't see any confusion St. Ann. Regarding #1: MANY news groups are reporting the same thing. Regarding #2: I am well aware of the difference between canon law and governmental civil law.
I am unimpressed by the portions you have highlighted. It sounds very similar to JWs. I was on the Holy See's website reading its policies years ago (2006-7), so most of this is not new to me. I was one of the first in congregation, when I still attended, to say that JW's policy was nothing more than the Catholic's policy...which is woefully inadequate.

Nice way to derail the conversation from the failings of the MODERN (as opposed to those backward Muslims) Catholic Church. ;)

Considering the Church decided to codify its stance in a document that is supposed to outline its "new" official stance/rules on child abuse, I think it is VERY controversial. In fact, abuse groups are having a FIT about it.

The long-anticipated new rules on sex abuse were issued by the Vatican this morning. In the days and weeks leading up to this, a lot of the details have been known and discussed, so some of it has been expected.
The more controversial decisions, however, came from these inclusions/ommissions from the new rules:
* Does not include "zero-tolerance" policy similar to the one adopted by U.S. bishops that makes it essentially one-strike-your-out for any priest committing pedophile
* Does, however, make attempts to ordain women as a "grave crime" that subject to the same punishment as sex abuse (the perceived equation of ordaining women to molesting children has had much of blogosphere howling)
* Does not mention any mandatory reporting of abuse to police ("If civil law requires you report, you must obey civil law," the Vatican's Monsignor Charles Scicluna told reporters at a press conference. But "it's not for canonical legislation to get itself involved with civil law.")

And controversially, the new document classifies the attempted ordination of a woman as a canonical crime equal in gravity to molesting minors and heresy. That has outraged advocates of greater rights for women within the Roman Catholic Church, many of them in the U.S.
